Hi, I'm Ava Lazar. I'm a Stanford student graduating in 2027 with a BA in Art Practice and a BS in Symbolic Systems. I'm also a CS Coterm student, graduating in 2028 with a MS in Computer Science.

With a background in fine art and documentary filmmaking, I approach technology with a user-centered perspective. I aim to bring joy and creativity into every element of my work.

Ask me about my:

Coding

I am pursuing a Masters in Computer Science at Stanford University. I'm fluent in Java, C, C++, and Python.

Documentary Filmmaking

I started creating political and historical documentary films at age 11 with my sister. I collected many awards and interviewed fascinating people: soil scientists, senators, CEOs.

Painting

My paintings serve as little portals into memories, representing what it felt like to be somewhere more than any photo could. My favorite mediums are gouache and acrylic.

Silversmithing

In August 2024, I took a Stanford Arts Intensive course in Silversmithing. I learned to think like a jeweler and to mold, cast, and cut silver.

Leatherworking and Ceramics

In 2021 and 2022, I attended a folk high school in Denmark where I took full-time classes in crafts like leatherworking, ceramics, sewing, and darkroom photography.

Bookbinding

I'm a self-taught bookbinder. I work to incorporate my own watercolor pieces and found items into my books.

Alcohol Ink

Alcohol ink is one of my favorite mediums: it's versatile and allows for so much experimentation. I have alcohol ink on my phone case, on my light switches, and on my sculptures using laser cut plexiglass.

Welding

In one of my sculpture classes at Stanford, I learned how to weld iron. I created a massive yellow umbrella that is very hard to store in a dorm room!

Film Photography

I first did film photography at Egå Ungdoms-Højskole in Denmark. I had long been doing digital photography and photoshop, but there was something magical about the physicality of the darkroom.
